Overview:
Ayobami Adebayo's two-book set, A Spell of Good Things and Stay With Me, offers a powerful entry into Nigerian fiction from one of its distinctive voices. This paperback collection suits readers who value character-driven stories, social realism, and emotional depth. Adebayo blends intimate family portraits with broad social textures—exploring ambition, love, and the costs of modern life in Nigeria. When a local politician takes an interest in Eniola and a family party ends in violence, their lives collide, revealing class tension, longing, and the risks of trust. The tone moves from quiet realism to urgent consequence, with tenderness amid danger.

About the Books:
A Spell of Good Things and Stay With Me present two distinct yet linked portraits of love, ambition, and resilience across Nigerian life. In A Spell of Good Things, Ayobami Adebayo introduces Eniola, a towering, ambitious boy whose father loses his job, and Wuraola, a brilliant young doctor from a wearying, privileged background. The pair's lives collide after a local politician shows interest in Eniola and a family party ends in violence, forcing them to confront social divides, exploitation, and yearning for a different future. The novel’s tone shifts from intimate social realism to brisk, suspenseful consequence, weaving tenderness with danger as characters reckon with loyalty, power, and choice. In Stay With Me, Yejide’s longing for a child becomes a crucible of love and loss set against Nigeria’s late-20th-century turbulence. Pressure from a traditionalist mother-in-law and the husband’s demands push the marriage toward crisis, while secrets accumulate and grief reshapes identities. The narrative probes the enduring strength of mothers, the pain of broken promises, and the ways memory anchors us. Together, the two novels in this set showcase Adebayo’s deft combination of lyrical prose, precise social observation, and deeply human storytelling. Readers will encounter unforgettable scenes, moral ambiguity, and emotional resonance that reward careful, patient reading, making this two-book collection a meaningful addition to any literary-fiction shelf. This pairing deepens with time, inviting rereads.
