Overview
A Nurse's Story: My Life in A&E During the Covid Crisis is a powerful first-hand memoir from advanced clinical practitioner Louise Curtis, capturing the reality of working on the emergency front line during the pandemic. Honest, moving and immediate, it takes readers behind the scenes of a busy A&E department as routine emergencies gave way to an unprecedented health crisis. This paperback memoir offers a rare, unvarnished view of NHS life for anyone wanting to understand what the Covid-19 crisis truly meant for the people who kept the country's emergency care running.
About the Book
Louise Curtis had been an emergency department nurse for almost eight years, and was newly qualified as an advanced clinical practitioner, when the Covid-19 pandemic transformed her working life. In A Nurse's Story, she describes what happened as the trickle of Covid patients became a flood, and the pressures of a major trauma centre reached breaking point. Curtis writes candidly about the life-or-death decisions she faced daily, the physical exhaustion of shift after shift in full PPE, and the emotional weight of caring for critically ill patients while separated from their families. Alongside the clinical drama, she reveals the quieter, equally devastating consequences of lockdown on wider society: patients too frightened to seek help for other conditions, a rise in domestic abuse, and an increase in suicide attempts, all landing on an already stretched A&E team. Told with warmth and unflinching honesty, it is a deeply personal account of resilience, teamwork and the toll that caring for others can take on the carer. It stands as a tribute to NHS staff everywhere.
About the Author
Louise Curtis is an advanced clinical practitioner working in the A&E department of a major trauma centre. She spent almost eight years as an emergency department nurse, working as both a staff nurse and deputy sister, before qualifying as an advanced clinical practitioner. Before training in nursing, she completed a degree in theology. Curtis has also volunteered abroad, caring for disabled orphans in South Africa, Thailand, Uganda and Ethiopia.
