Overview
Adele is a taut, unflinching novel of obsession and secrecy from Leïla Slimani, the Prix Goncourt-winning author of Lullaby. On the surface, Adèle has everything: a respected career in journalism, a beautiful Paris apartment, a surgeon husband and a young son. Beneath that veneer, however, lies a woman driven by compulsions she can barely name, let alone control. This brand new paperback edition is a compelling choice for readers of literary and psychological fiction, and a natural pick for book clubs wanting a provocative, discussion-worthy read.

About the Book
Adèle appears to have it all: professional respect, a glamorous home, a devoted husband and a healthy child. Yet beneath this carefully maintained image, she is restless, bored, and increasingly governed by an insatiable need that has nothing to do with the life she has built. She begins orchestrating her days around one-night stands and secret affairs, arriving late to work, inventing alibis for her husband, and allowing her double life to consume more and more of her attention. As the novel unfolds, the gap between Adèle's public persona and her private compulsions widens into something dangerous, threatening the fragile architecture of her marriage and her sense of self. Slimani, translated here by Sam Taylor, writes with a cool, clinical precision that never tips into judgement, instead inviting readers to sit with the discomfort of a woman who cannot simply choose to want a different life. Told with the same psychological sharpness that made her novel Lullaby a global sensation, Adele examines addiction, desire, and the performance of a "perfect" life with unusual candour. It is a short, intense read, ideal for anyone drawn to morally complex characters and stories that resist easy resolution.
