Overview:
Bring home a full decade of gentle adventures with this ten-book Alfie collection by Shirley Hughes, one of Britain's most cherished children's authors. Written and illustrated for children aged 3 to 7, these paperback stories follow Alfie through nursery school, holidays, birthday parties and quiet moments at home. Each book is short enough for a single sitting yet rich enough to reward rereading, making the set an ideal introduction to independent reading and a warm addition to any bookshelf.
About the Books:
Across these ten stories, Alfie experiences the everyday triumphs and small worries that shape early childhood. He races his sister Annie Rose, learns to share his favourite blanket at a birthday party, discovers the delight of puddles in new boots, and helps out when a neighbour is in need. Nursery school mornings, family outings, seaside holidays and quiet evenings all provide the backdrop for Hughes's blend of humour and tenderness. Her illustrations, in soft pen-and-watercolour, capture the texture of ordinary domestic life - cluttered kitchens, muddy shoes, and the reassuring presence of family - giving young readers a mirror for their own experiences. The narrative never talks down to its audience; instead it treats a toddler's worries about a lost toy or a first day at nursery with real seriousness, which is part of why these stories have remained beloved for decades. Simple, rhythmic sentences and recurring characters build reading confidence, while themes of friendship and patience give parents plenty to talk about at bedtime.
