Overview
This six-book Andrea Levy collection brings together her complete fiction, from her acclaimed debut through to her Orange Prize-winning masterpiece. Spanning postwar London, nineteenth-century Jamaica, and contemporary Britain, these paperbacks trace the shared history of Jamaica and Britain with warmth, wit, and honesty. A superb gift set for readers of literary and historical fiction, book clubs, and anyone drawn to stories of migration and identity.
About the Book(s)
Small Island is set in 1948 London, where Queenie Bligh's decision to take in Jamaican lodgers stirs her neighbours' disapproval as she waits, uncertain, for her husband's return from war. It remains Levy's most celebrated novel, winner of the Orange Prize and Whitbread Book of the Year. The Long Song follows July, born into slavery on the Amity sugar plantation, as her story unfolds against the Baptist War of 1831 and the eventual abolition of slavery; shortlisted for the Booker Prize, it won the Walter Scott Prize. Fruit of the Lemon centres on Faith Jackson, a young Londoner navigating a new television job and the complexities of her Jamaican heritage after her parents plan a move back to the island. Every Light in the House Burnin', Levy's debut, follows the Jacob family as illness brings them into contact with the NHS. Never Far From Nowhere traces sisters Olive and Vivien, born in London to Jamaican parents, whose lives diverge amid friendship and racial tension on their estate. Six Stories and an Essay closes the set with an autobiographical essay on heritage and writing, followed by short fiction. Together, the titles offer a rounded portrait of one of Britain's most important novelists.
