About the Book
Beauty and the Beast is one of the most enduring fairy tales ever told, the story of a merchant's youngest daughter who sacrifices her freedom to save her father, only to discover that true beauty lies beneath the surface. This edition gathers that timeless tale with a wider selection of classic fairy stories, drawing on the folklore traditions Andrew Lang famously collected and popularised through his renowned "Coloured" Fairy Books. Lang was not the original author of these centuries-old folk tales, but as a Victorian scholar he was instrumental in preserving and retelling them for new generations, working alongside his wife Leonora Blanche Alleyne, who translated and adapted many of the stories published under his name. Presented in a handsome hardback binding with the look and feel of fine leather, this collection is designed to be revisited again and again, whether read aloud at bedtime or enjoyed independently. Its substantial page count reflects the breadth of tales included, making it excellent value as both a story collection and a decorative addition to a home library. Perfect for introducing children to classic storytelling while appealing to adult lovers of folklore, this edition preserves the charm and wonder that have made these stories beloved for generations.
About the Author
Andrew Lang FBA (1844–1912) was a Scottish poet, novelist, literary critic and anthropologist, best remembered as a prolific collector and populariser of fairy and folk tales. Born in Selkirk in the Scottish Borders, Lang became one of the most influential figures in the Victorian revival of fairy tale literature through his famous series of "Coloured" Fairy Books. He married Leonora Blanche Alleyne in 1875, who worked closely with him as translator and co-author on many of the tales attributed to his name. The Andrew Lang Lectures at the University of St Andrews honour his enduring legacy.
