Overview
Escape to the wind-lashed Isles of Scilly with this six-book paperback collection following Detective Inspector Ben Kitto through a run of atmospheric island mysteries. From bonfire-night horror to a bride found hanging from a cliff face, Kate Rhodes builds tension, grief and community secrets against a backdrop of storm-battered coastlines. Ideal for readers of British procedural crime who love a strong sense of place, this set delivers six complete, standalone-friendly cases featuring a detective haunted by his past and determined to protect the tight-knit islands he calls home.
About the Books
Each title plunges Ben Kitto into a fresh case rooted in the isolation of the Isles of Scilly. In Devil's Table, a foggy night attack leaves one twin missing and the other unable to speak, launching an investigation into buried resentments. Burnt Island opens with a charred body found on a bonfire during St Agnes's Fifth-of-November celebrations, forcing Kitto to confront long-hidden grudges among neighbours. In Ruin Beach, now Deputy Chief of Police, Kitto battles the slower pace of island life as a quiet summer turns dangerous. Pulpit Rock sees a swimathon interrupted by the shocking discovery of a body in a bridal gown. Hell Bay, chronologically the series opener, brings Kitto home to Bryher after a traumatic decade with London's murder squad, only for a fresh murder to test his recovery. Finally, The Brutal Tide raises the stakes as Craig Travis, a gang leader Kitto helped convict, returns seeking revenge. Across all six novels, Rhodes combines classic whodunit plotting with the emotional cost of policing a place where no secret stays buried for long.
About the Author
Kate Rhodes is a British crime writer known for atmospheric, character-driven mysteries. She holds a PhD focused on the work of Tennessee Williams and was awarded a fellowship from the Hawthornden Literary Institute. Alongside the Ben Kitto / Isles of Scilly Mysteries, she writes the London-set Alice Quentin psychological thriller series. Rhodes regularly visits the Isles of Scilly, and her knowledge of the islands' weather, tides and close community life lends real authenticity to every Ben Kitto novel.
