Overview
This two-book paperback collection brings together B.K.S. Iyengar's two most influential works on yoga practice and philosophy. Light on Yoga remains the definitive reference on asana, while Light on Pranayama offers the same authoritative depth on yogic breathing. Together they form an essential foundation for beginners and experienced practitioners alike, blending precise technical instruction with the spiritual context that made Iyengar one of the most respected yoga teachers of the twentieth century.
About the Books
Light on Yoga is widely regarded as the definitive guide to yoga practice and has served generations of students as their primary reference text. It presents Iyengar's meticulous, step-by-step approach to asana, combining photographic demonstration with detailed instruction on alignment, technique and the therapeutic benefits of each posture. The book also introduces readers to the philosophical roots of yoga, tracing its origins and situating physical practice within a broader spiritual framework.
Light on Pranayama complements this with a comprehensive exploration of yogic breathing. Iyengar brings the same precision and clarity to the subtle art of pranayama, guiding readers through breathing techniques that support both physical health and meditative focus. Where Light on Yoga concentrates on posture, this companion volume develops the practitioner's understanding of breath control as a discipline in its own right, essential for progressing beyond the physical aspects of yoga into its deeper contemplative dimensions.
Together, these two books represent the core teachings of Iyengar Yoga, a style built on precision, alignment and accessibility for practitioners of all abilities. They remain standard texts in yoga studios and training courses worldwide.
About the Author
Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar (14 December 1918 – 20 August 2014) was an Indian yoga teacher and author, and the founder of Iyengar Yoga. He was one of the earliest students of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, often called the father of modern yoga, and went on to become one of the most respected yoga teachers in the world. His many books on yoga practice and philosophy, including Light on Yoga and Light on Pranayama, helped popularise yoga first in India and then globally, establishing him as a defining figure in bringing the discipline to Western audiences.
