Overview
The Blue Door Collection brings together all five books in Pamela Brown's much-loved theatrical series, beginning with the classic The Swish of the Curtain. Written when Brown was a teenager, these stories follow stage-struck children who found their own amateur theatre company. Funny, warm and full of backstage drama, this complete paperback set is a wonderful introduction to a classic of British children's literature, ideal for readers who love adventure, friendship and performance.
About the Books
The Blue Door series began life in 1938, when a fourteen-year-old Pamela Brown started writing about seven children who convert a disused chapel into a theatre and form the Blue Door Theatre Company in the fictional town of Fenchester. The Swish of the Curtain introduces Lyn, Sandra, Vicky, Bulldog, Nigel, Jeremy and irrepressible nine-year-old Maddy, whose determination to put on a show captures the imagination of everyone around them. The four sequels in this set - Blue Door Venture, Maddy Alone, Golden Pavements and Maddy Again - continue the friends' adventures as they grow older and chase their theatrical ambitions further afield. Readers follow the highs and lows of amateur dramatics, rivalries, first successes and setbacks, told with the wit of a young author writing about the world she knew. The books have been reprinted many times since their 1940s publication and continue to charm new readers, reportedly inspiring real-life performers to take up acting. This paperback collection gathers the complete five-book series, making it easy to enjoy the Blue Door Theatre Company's story from beginning to end.
About the Author
Pamela Brown (1924-1989) was a British novelist, actress and television producer. She began writing The Swish of the Curtain at just fourteen years old, sending chapters to school friends before finishing the manuscript at sixteen. The book, and its four sequels that make up the Blue Door series, drew on Brown's own love of theatre and her Colchester childhood, reimagined as the fictional town of Fenchester. She went on to a career as a professional actress and television producer, but it is her much-loved Blue Door books that remain her most enduring legacy for young readers.
Why You'll Love This Collection
