Overview
Step into the tiny, cosy world of Brambly Hedge, where a community of mice live out the changing seasons among the roots and branches of an old English hedgerow. This treasured hardback collection gathers all eight classic Brambly Hedge stories into one beautifully produced volume, perfect for reading aloud or curling up with alone. Jill Barklem's exquisitely detailed watercolour illustrations bring the mice's miniature world to life on every page, making this a wonderful introduction to a much-loved classic for a new generation of young readers.
About the Books
First published in 1980, the Brambly Hedge stories follow the mice through the seasons and the milestones of village life. In Autumn Story, the mice race to gather winter stores. Spring Story sees Wilfred celebrate his birthday with a surprise picnic, while Summer Story basks in long, sun-drenched days. Winter Story brings deep snowdrifts and fireside gatherings, and Poppy's Babies captures the busy chaos of new arrivals at the old mill. Sea Story takes Primrose on an unexpected adventure, The High Hills follows Flax and Lily delivering blankets to the vole families before the cold sets in, and The Secret Staircase closes the collection with magical midwinter celebrations. Together, these eight tales capture the rhythms of nature, community and family life with warmth and extraordinary artistic detail. Barklem's intricate cross-section illustrations of the mice's homes - from Mr Apple's Store Stump to the Old Oak Palace - have delighted readers for over four decades. This edition brings the full set together in one durable hardback, easy to enjoy in sequence or dip into season by season.
About the Author
Jill Barklem (born Gillian Gaze, 1951-2017) was a British writer and illustrator best known for creating the Brambly Hedge series, first published in 1980. Raised in Epping, Essex, she developed her love of drawing after an accident as a teenager kept her away from school sports. She went on to study illustration at St Martin's School of Art in London, where the idea for Brambly Hedge began to take shape.
