About the Author
Catherine Cookson was born in Tyne Dock, the illegitimate daughter of a poverty-stricken woman she believed to be her older sister. She later married Tom Cookson and began writing novels rooted in her North East upbringing. Her novel The Round Tower won the Winifred Holtby Award for best regional novel in 1968, and her books went on to sell in the millions worldwide. She received an OBE in 1985 and was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1993, before her death in June 1998.
