Overview
Follow three generations of the Cazalet family from the sun-drenched summers of pre-war Sussex through the upheaval of the Second World War and into the changed world of the 1950s. Elizabeth Jane Howard's five-volume saga, collected here in one complete paperback set, is a richly detailed, deeply human portrait of family life, love and loss. Beloved for its emotional truth, it's perfect for fans of classic family sagas and costume drama.
About the Books
The Cazalet Chronicles opens with The Light Years, in which the extended Cazalet family gathers each summer at Home Place, their Sussex country home, enjoying picnics, games and seaside excursions while quietly nursing private heartaches. In Marking Time, the outbreak of the Second World War shatters this idyll, and a new generation of Cazalet cousins begins to grapple with adult secrets and wartime anxiety. Confusion carries the family through the darkest years of the war, as London and Sussex alike are marked by loss, while the cousins' personal lives grow ever more complicated. In Casting Off, the war has ended and the Cazalet cousins, now in their twenties, must rebuild their lives amid infidelity, grief and the search for love. The saga concludes with All Change, set in the 1950s, as the death of matriarch "the Duchy" marks the end of an era of servants, class and tradition for the Cazalet family. Together, these five novels form one of the most acclaimed family sagas in modern British fiction, praised for its social observation, elegant prose and unforgettable characters who age across three decades. Readers who love intergenerational storytelling and wartime drama will find this collection utterly absorbing.
