Overview
Chasing Smoke: Cooking Over Fire Around the Levant is a cookbook from Honey & Co's Sarit Packer and Itamar Srulovich, celebrated London restaurateurs known for vibrant Middle Eastern cooking. This beautifully photographed hardback takes readers on a journey through the Levant, gathering fire-cooked recipes and culinary culture from grill houses, kerbside stalls and family kitchens, translating them into simple, mouth-watering dishes for the home cook.
About the Book
Fire has always been central to Sarit and Itamar's cooking, both at home and at their grill house, Honey & Smoke, and this book distils that passion into 256 pages of recipes and travel narrative. The duo journeys through their favourite cities across the Levant, from rural Jordan to Alexandria, southern Turkey, Israel and Thessaloniki, gathering the dishes and stories that define the region's love affair with live-fire cooking. The recipes are organised into five ingredient-led chapters: Fruit & Vegetables, Fish & Seafood, Birds, Lamb & Other Meats, and Bread & Unmissables. Expect grilled peaches with almond tahini and charred endive, figs with manouri cheese and pomegranate sauce, prawns in honey and fresh coriander, and smoked short ribs, each recipe showing how heat, wood, flesh and plant come together to create something special. True to Honey & Co's ethos, many recipes include kitchen-friendly alternatives for cooks without access to a grill, making this as practical for a weeknight dinner as a weekend barbecue. The book was shortlisted in the International or Regional Cookbook category at the Guild of Food Writers Awards 2022.
About the Authors
Sarit Packer and Itamar Srulovich opened Honey & Co in 2012, followed by their grill house Honey & Smoke and deli Honey & Spice. Sarit has cooked since childhood and trained at Butler's Wharf, the Orrery, J Sheekey, The OXO Tower, Ottolenghi and Nopi. Itamar, born and raised in Jerusalem, trained on the job across Tel Aviv, where he met Sarit. Their debut, Honey & Co: Food from the Middle East, was named Cookbook of the Year by The Sunday Times and won the Guild of Food Writers' Award for Best First Book.
