Overview
This powerful two-book collection brings together Christie Watson's acclaimed nursing memoirs in one brand-new paperback set. Drawing on her twenty years working as a registered nurse, Watson offers an unflinching, compassionate window into life on the wards. The Language of Kindness, a number one Sunday Times bestseller, and The Courage to Care, its celebrated follow-up, together form an essential, moving portrait of the NHS and the people who keep it running, told with warmth, honesty and rare literary skill.
About the Books
The Language of Kindness takes readers from birth to death, from A&E to the mortuary, charting Christie Watson's career as she nurses a premature baby through the night, stands beside a patient during an agonising heart-lung transplant, and gently washes the hair of a child fatally injured in a fire before the grieving family arrive. It is an astonishing account of a profession defined by acts of care, compassion and quiet heroism, revealing the emotional weight nurses carry every single day. The Courage to Care continues this exploration, turning the focus outward to the wider community nurses serve: in hospitals, schools, prisons, hospices and care homes. Watson reveals the remarkable extent of nurses' work beyond the ward, and shows how, time and again, it is patients and their families who display extraordinary strength in the most difficult of circumstances. Together, these two books offer a rare, humane insight into modern healthcare, capturing both devastating and deeply uplifting moments. This collection is essential reading for anyone touched by the care of a nurse.
