Overview
Down to Earth: Gardening Wisdom is Monty Don's distillation of fifty years spent digging, sowing and pruning in his own garden at Longmeadow. Written in his familiar, conversational voice, this hardcover companion moves through the gardening year month by month, sharing candid opinions on design, planting and the quiet satisfaction of growing things well. It is a thoughtful, browsable gift for anyone who already loves being outdoors with soil under their fingernails, and a warm introduction for newer gardeners seeking honest, hard-won advice.

About the Book
Best known as the long-standing presenter of BBC's Gardeners' World, Monty Don brings the same relaxed, conversational tone to the page in Down to Earth. Rather than a strict how-to manual, the book reads as though Monty is walking beside you through his own garden, sharing lessons learned across five decades of hands-on horticulture. Chapters are short and clearly signposted, covering shrubs, containers, colour, seasons, pests and compost, alongside the everyday realities of growing fruit, vegetables and herbs at home. A month-by-month guide at the back distils the key jobs for each part of the year, making it easy to dip in and out as the seasons change. Throughout, Monty's writing is generous with opinion and light on jargon, encouraging readers to trust their own instincts rather than chase perfection. The book is illustrated with photographs taken in his own garden at Longmeadow, offering glimpses rarely seen on television, and pairs practical guidance with genuine reflection on why gardening matters. It remained one of the UK's top-selling gardening titles for several years after publication, and rewards both dedicated gardeners and those simply curious about life outdoors. It makes a fitting gift for anyone who watches Gardeners' World or already owns a trowel and a patch of soil to call their own.
