Overview
Elizabethans is Andrew Marr's Sunday Times bestselling history of modern Britain, now adapted into a major BBC TV series. Spanning the decades since the Queen's accession in 1953, Marr traces the extraordinary individuals who shaped the country we live in today. Told with wit, warmth and sharp insight, this hardback edition is a vivid first draft of contemporary British history, perfect for readers of popular history, biography and social commentary.
About the Book
In Elizabethans, Andrew Marr sets out to answer a deceptively simple question: who made modern Britain the country it is today? Ranging from politicians and inventors to musicians, activists and rebels, Marr weaves together the stories of people who reshaped the nation across the second Elizabethan age. From David Attenborough to Zaha Hadid, from Dusty Springfield to David Olusoga, the book moves through post-war austerity, the cultural explosions of the 1960s, industrial decline, immigration and the birth of a genuinely diverse Britain. Marr's trademark style combines the pace of a well-told story with the rigour of a seasoned journalist and broadcaster, offering unexpected angles on famous names and overlooked figures alike. The book has been widely praised for its accessibility and narrative drive, likened by reviewers to watching a national drama unfold chapter by chapter. Since publication, Elizabethans has become a Sunday Times bestseller and has been adapted into a major BBC television series, cementing its place as one of the defining popular histories of modern Britain. This brand new hardback edition makes an excellent addition to any home library or a thoughtful gift for history lovers.
