Overview
Fear Stalks the Land! is a pocket-sized commonplace book gathering the private faxes, notes, fledgling lyrics, sketches and scribblings exchanged between Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke and artist Stanley Donwood during 1999-2000, the period in which Kid A and Amnesiac were created. Brand new in paperback, it offers fans and creatives alike a rare, intimate window into the messy, exhilarating process behind two of the most acclaimed albums of the era, capturing the fears and fantasies of a world facing a new millennium.
About the Book
This is a document unlike a conventional book: a scrapbook of the creative dialogue between two collaborators at the height of their powers. Inside are faxes sent back and forth, half-formed lyrics that would later become some of Radiohead's most enduring songs, sketches, lists, and stream-of-consciousness scribblings "towards nirvana". Compiled from material exchanged during the making of Kid A and Amnesiac, the book reveals the anxieties of the age - millennial dread, surveillance, the corrosive pull of technology - refracted through Yorke's lyrical fragments and Donwood's visual imagination. It is published alongside the companion full-colour artwork volume, Kid A Mnesia, and stands as the first collection of writing from either author. Presented as a compact A-format paperback with French flaps, a five-colour debossed cover, and black-and-white imagery throughout, it feels like a discovered artefact rather than a polished retrospective. Long-time listeners can trace lyrics back to their earliest scrawled forms; newer fans get an accessible entry into the band's most experimental era. Students of music, art and design will find plenty in the raw interplay of word and image, while collectors gain a genuine primary document from a celebrated creative partnership.
About the Author
Thom Yorke is a musician, composer and artist, best known as the lead vocalist and songwriter of Radiohead. Stanley Donwood is a graphic designer, artist and writer who has published three collections of stories and has worked with Radiohead since 1994, producing all of the band's album artwork and promotional material. Their long-running creative partnership has shaped the visual and lyrical identity of some of the most acclaimed albums in modern music, and this book is their first published collection of shared writing.
Why You'll Love This Book
A tactile, intimate glimpse into how Kid A and Amnesiac were born, Fear Stalks the Land! rewards fans and creatives with rare artwork, unfinished lyrics and the honest mess of two artists working through doubt towards something extraordinary.
