Overview
Fluke is a moving, genre-bending novel from Master of Horror James Herbert, blending gentle emotion with his signature twisting storytelling. Rather than pure horror, this is a tender, thought-provoking tale told from the perspective of a stray dog haunted by fragments of a human life. Fans of Herbert's chilling classics will find a surprisingly heartfelt story here, and readers new to his work will discover why he remains one of Britain's most beloved bestselling novelists.
About the Book
A stringy mongrel wanders the streets of an English town, driven by a ravenous hunger and hunting a prey he cannot define. Somewhere in the depths of his consciousness, the dog they call Fluke senses that he was once something else entirely - a man. As fractured memories claw their way to the surface, Fluke begins piecing together the life he lost: a wife, a daughter, a career, and the mysterious circumstances of his death. His journey takes him from the harsh realities of the streets to a travelling circus, and eventually back towards the family he can barely remember, all while he tries to uncover why his human life ended so suddenly. James Herbert, famed for classics such as The Rats and The Fog, strips away the overt horror here in favour of pathos, warmth and dark humour, viewing the everyday human world afresh through canine eyes. It is a story about memory, loss, loyalty and the possibility of second chances, wrapped in a page-turning narrative that has captivated readers since it was first published. This edition presents the novel in a brand-new paperback, perfect for long-time Herbert fans revisiting an old favourite or new readers curious about his more emotional, reflective side.
