Overview
Goose Green: The Decisive Battle of the Falklands War is a powerful oral history of the opening, and ultimately decisive, engagement of Britain's 1982 campaign to retake the Falklands. Compiled by former Para and SAS soldier Nigel 'Spud' Ely, it gathers more than a hundred exclusive testimonies from the men who were there. Rather than another dry official account, this paperback delivers a raw, human record of chaos, courage and comradeship under fire — essential reading for genuine military history fans.
About the Book
On 28 May 1982, some 450 men of 2nd Battalion, the Parachute Regiment advanced on the settlement of Goose Green, where over a thousand Argentine troops held more than a hundred Falkland Islanders. What followed became the decisive battle of the war, and this book tells that story entirely through the words of those who fought it. Nigel Ely gathers testimony not only from 2 Para but from the SAS, the Royal Navy and the Merchant Navy, building a fuller, multi-perspective account than any single memoir could offer. The interviews were recorded face to face, preserving each speaker's own voice and lending the narrative an unmistakable authenticity. The result is a book that moves between tactical detail and deeply personal reflection: fear, loss, dark humour and quiet heroism all sit side by side. Ely himself was on the first landing craft ashore at San Carlos and served as point man during the advance on Goose Green, giving him a rare insider's understanding of the material assembled here.
About the Author
Nigel 'Spud' Ely served as a private soldier in 2 Para before becoming one of the youngest men ever to pass Selection into 22 SAS. During the Falklands War he was on the first landing craft to hit the beach at San Carlos and acted as point man for the battle for Goose Green, later fighting at Wireless Ridge. He has gone on to work as a military consultant and war photojournalist, and has written several books drawing on his frontline soldiering experience across multiple conflicts.
Why You'll Love This Book
Told entirely in the words of the men who were there, Goose Green offers an unfiltered, deeply human view of a pivotal modern battle — vivid, moving and unlike any official history you've read before.
