Overview
Island is a hopeful, moving coming-of-age story from David Almond, the Carnegie Medal-winning author of Skellig. Written for World Book Day 2017, this compact paperback follows sixteen-year-old Louise as her quiet, familiar visits to the island of Lindisfarne are transformed by the arrival of a mysterious stranger. Themes of love, loss, identity and hope run through this beautifully told tale, making it a perfect introduction to Almond's acclaimed body of work for teen and young adult readers.
About the Book
Sixteen-year-old Louise travels with her father to the island of Lindisfarne every year, just as she always has - it's the place her late mother loved best of all. But everything changes with the arrival of Hassan, a refugee from war-torn Syria. Restless and yearning for independence, Louise finds herself drawn to the fiercely free and self-reliant Hassan, an acrobat who seems to know the island as though it were his home from birth - perhaps even a sorcerer, perhaps a source of danger. A wild gang of local boys wants him cast out, and as tensions rise, the forces of love, death and hope pull Louise and Hassan towards a deeper understanding of themselves and the world around them - a world both cruel and compassionate. Written especially for World Book Day 2017, Island distils David Almond's trademark lyrical, mythic storytelling into a short, powerful read. It captures the wild beauty of Lindisfarne and the very real, contemporary resonance of displacement and belonging, offering young readers an accessible entry point into literary fiction that doesn't shy away from big questions. Fans of Skellig and A Song for Ella Grey will recognise Almond's gift for blending the everyday with the magical, and for treating teenage readers with honesty and respect. Compact, affordable and beautifully written, this edition is ideal for reluctant readers, book clubs, and anyone wanting a quick but genuinely rewarding read.
