Overview
Step into the relentless world of DC Jack Warr, the sharp, dogged detective at the heart of Lynda La Plante's gripping crime series. This four-book paperback collection brings together Buried, Judas Horse, Vanished and Pure Evil, following Jack as he untangles arson, burglary rings, stalking and organised crime. Fans of tightly plotted British police procedurals will find atmosphere, twists and morally complex characters, wrapped up in brand-new paperback editions perfect for reading in order or as standalone mysteries.
About the Books
In Buried, newly relocated DC Jack Warr is drawn into an investigation after a charred body and burnt stolen banknotes are found following a cottage fire, forcing him to confront secrets that upend his life. Judas Horse sees Jack investigating violent countryside burglaries that escalate into murder when a mutilated body is found in a Cotswolds house, uncovering a web of rural crime and hidden pasts. In Vanished, Jack is the only one who believes an eccentric widow's claims that she's being stalked by her former lodger - until she is found murdered and the case widens into an international drugs operation. Finally, Pure Evil begins as a straightforward armed assault case but spirals darker when Jack's mentor, DCI Ridley, is abruptly removed from his post with no explanation, leaving Jack to work out how deep the corruption runs. Across all four novels, La Plante's trademark authenticity - drawn from decades of research into real police work - drives fast-paced, believable plotting, while Jack Warr emerges as a compelling, flawed lead distinct from her earlier creations like Jane Tennison.
