Overview
Step into the smoke, scandal and suspicion of Restoration London with this four-book paperback collection from Sunday Times bestselling author Andrew Taylor. Following clerk-turned-investigator James Marwood and the resourceful Cat Lovett, these interlinked historical crime novels move from the ashes of the Great Fire through courtroom intrigue, royal conspiracy and the lingering shadow of civil war, delivering four immersive mysteries in one brand-new boxed paperback set for fans of atmospheric, character-driven crime fiction.

About the Books
This collection gathers the first four instalments of Andrew Taylor's acclaimed James Marwood & Cat Lovett series in chronological reading order. In The Ashes of London, London still smoulders from the Great Fire of 1666 when a body is discovered in the ruins of St Paul's Cathedral, drawing Marwood, son of a suspected traitor, into a dangerous hunt for a killer. The Fire Court follows the rebuilding of the city, where a suspicious death near the court overseeing reconstruction pulls Marwood back into a web of corruption and self-interest. The King's Evil raises the stakes further, placing Marwood at the heart of Charles II's court as a scandal involving royal touch-healing threatens to destabilise the monarchy itself. Finally, The Last Protector reopens old civil war wounds when Richard Cromwell, son of the former Lord Protector, returns from exile, forcing Marwood and Cat to navigate a nation still haunted by its recent, bloody past. Across all four novels, Taylor's forensic research into seventeenth-century London — its politics, plague, fire and faith — creates a richly textured backdrop for tightly plotted mysteries. Recurring characters develop across the series, rewarding readers who follow the collection in order, while each book also works as a satisfying standalone mystery for newcomers to the series.
