Overview
This two-book paperback collection brings together two of Kazuo Ishiguro's most celebrated novels: the Booker Prize-winning The Remains of the Day and the Booker-shortlisted Never Let Me Go. Together they showcase the quiet, devastating power of Ishiguro's prose, exploring memory, duty, love and the passage of time. A perfect introduction for new readers and a beautiful set for longstanding fans of this Nobel Prize-winning author, ideal for gifting or building a personal library of modern classics.
About the Books
The Remains of the Day follows Stevens, the ageing butler of Darlington Hall, as he embarks on a journey through the English countryside in the summer of 1956 that becomes a journey into his own past. Through his precise, restrained narration, Ishiguro unpicks a lifetime of duty, missed opportunity and unspoken love, set against the backdrop of a fading aristocratic England between the wars. It remains one of the most acclaimed British novels of the twentieth century, winner of the 1989 Booker Prize and adapted into a beloved film starring Anthony Hopkins.
Never Let Me Go imagines the lives of a group of students growing up in a quietly unsettling version of contemporary England. Narrated by Kathy, now thirty-one, the novel traces her attempts to make sense of her childhood at the seemingly idyllic Hailsham School, and of the fate that has always awaited her and her closest friends. A haunting meditation on love, friendship, memory and mortality, it was shortlisted for the Booker Prize and named one of Time magazine's 100 best English-language novels since 1923. Together, these two novels represent Ishiguro at his most emotionally precise and profound, rewarding readers who appreciate understated, deeply human storytelling.
