Overview
Lean Fall Stand is Jon McGregor's gripping, tender novel about an Antarctic expedition gone catastrophically wrong and the long, quiet aftermath for everyone touched by it. When veteran field assistant Robert "Doc" Wright is caught in a violent storm, the disaster leaves him unable to communicate what happened, and his wife Anna must piece together a new life around his silence. Spare, precise, and deeply humane, this brand-new hardback is a standout piece of contemporary literary fiction, perfect for readers who love slow-burning, character-driven storytelling.

About the Book
Lean Fall Stand opens on the ice, where a routine Antarctic research trip becomes a fight for survival when a sudden storm separates three men from their base. What follows is a searching study of consequence: how one catastrophic event ripples outward through marriages, friendships, and the quiet work of recovery. Robert "Doc" Wright, an experienced Antarctic hand, returns home altered, his speech and memory fractured, and the novel's second half shifts focus to his wife Anna as she learns to communicate with, care for, and ultimately rediscover the man she married. Jon McGregor brings his trademark precision and empathy to a story that resists easy resolution. Critics have praised the novel's unusual structure and its refusal to sensationalise trauma, focusing instead on the undervalued courage of simply enduring. The book was named a White Review Book of the Year and drew praise from major literary voices. Told in spare, rhythmic prose, it rewards patient reading and lingers long after the final page, making it ideal for book clubs and literary fiction collectors alike.
