Overview
Life Without Diabetes is the practical, research-backed guide from Professor Roy Taylor, the Newcastle University academic whose work underpins the NHS's own type 2 diabetes remission programme. Written for patients, families and healthcare professionals alike, it explains in plain English why type 2 diabetes develops and how a structured, evidence-based weight-loss plan can reverse it. This brand-new paperback distils four decades of clinical research into a clear, achievable roadmap for lasting health.

About the Book
For generations, type 2 diabetes was treated as an incurable, progressively worsening condition. Professor Roy Taylor's research overturned that assumption. Having identified in 2006 the biological link between fat in the liver and pancreas and insulin resistance, Taylor went on to lead the landmark DiRECT trial with Professor Mike Lean of Glasgow, proving that sustained weight loss through structured dietary change could return blood sugar to non-diabetic levels for years afterwards. Life Without Diabetes translates that science into a step-by-step programme any reader can follow. The book explains exactly what happens in the liver, pancreas and fat stores as type 2 diabetes takes hold, then sets out the three-step Newcastle weight-loss plan behind the NHS-piloted remission programme. Alongside the core plan, readers will find tried-and-tested recipes from real trial participants, practical guidance on monitoring progress, and honest discussion of the challenges of sustained weight loss. The tone throughout is compassionate rather than clinical, written for people newly diagnosed, those hoping to avoid lifelong medication, carers, and healthcare professionals seeking a patient-friendly resource. It is not a fad diet book — it is a rigorously evidenced programme grounded in major university trials, explained by the scientist who ran them.

About the Author
Professor Roy Taylor is Professor of Medicine and Metabolism at Newcastle University and an honorary consultant physician within Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Over four decades he has researched the causes of type 2 diabetes, developing the Twin Cycle Hypothesis and leading the DiRECT trial that proved diet-induced remission was achievable in primary care. He has authored over 300 scientific papers and also developed the UK's diabetic eye screening programme, helping make diabetes no longer the leading cause of avoidable blindness in working-age adults.

Why You'll Love This Health Guide
A rare combination of rigorous science and genuine compassion, this paperback offers real hope rather than quick fixes — a practical, trusted roadmap to reversing type 2 diabetes from the researcher whose work shaped NHS policy.
