Overview

Lifeshocks: And How to Love Them is Sophie Sabbage's powerful follow-up to her bestselling memoir The Cancer Whisperer. Drawing on decades of experience in human development and her own life-altering cancer diagnosis, Sabbage explores the unexpected, unwanted moments that jolt us out of our assumptions and invites readers to meet them with curiosity rather than fear. This is a thoughtful, practical guide for anyone facing hardship, change, or uncertainty who wants to turn adversity into growth.

About the Book

We all experience moments when the life we expected collides with the life that actually unfolds — a diagnosis, a break-up, a redundancy, a loss. Sophie Sabbage calls these collisions "lifeshocks," and in this book she argues that how we respond to them, rather than the events themselves, determines the course of our lives. Drawing on candid stories from her own experience of late-stage lung cancer, as well as examples from clients she has mentored through decades of work in mindset transformation and corporate culture change, Sabbage shows how our earliest reactions to disappointment and pain often become ingrained patterns that quietly diminish our lives. She then offers a different path: recognising each lifeshock as an invitation to greater authenticity. The book categorises different types of lifeshocks and the particular "gift" each one carries, offering readers practical tools to access those gifts more quickly and consciously rather than being knocked off course for months or years. Written with warmth, honesty, and hard-won wisdom, Lifeshocks moves beyond simple positive thinking to a grounded, real-world framework for resilience. It is a book for readers navigating illness, grief, career upheaval, relationship breakdown, or simply the ordinary shocks of being human, and who want to meet those moments with more courage and self-compassion.
