Overview
Listen is a compassionate, practical guide to the conversations we most often avoid: illness, dying, grief, mental health and family rifts. Drawing on decades of frontline medical experience alongside modern psychology, Kathryn Mannix shows readers how to speak honestly and listen well when it matters most. Perfect for fans of With the End in Mind, this paperback offers comfort, insight and real tools for navigating life's hardest talks with courage and warmth.
About the Book
We all face moments when the right words matter but feel impossible to find: a teenager coming out to a parent, a family confronting a terminal diagnosis, a friend spotting early signs of dementia, or a difficult exchange between generations with different views. In Listen, Kathryn Mannix explores why these conversations so often leave us feeling we should have said more, listened harder, or been braver in the face of discomfort. Rather than offering a rigid script, she weaves together real stories from her long career in medicine with the latest research in psychology and communication, revealing the patterns beneath conversations that succeed and those that falter. She examines the fear of saying the wrong thing, the instinct to change the subject, and the quiet courage required to simply be present with someone else's pain. Chapter by chapter, she builds a toolkit for genuine listening — one that respects silence, tolerates uncertainty, and values honesty over false reassurance. The result is a book that is as useful for parents and partners as it is for carers, teachers and friends, giving readers the confidence to lean into difficult moments rather than away from them. Following the bestselling success of With the End in Mind, Listen broadens Mannix's focus beyond dying to the full range of conversations that shape our relationships, making it an essential companion for anyone who wants to communicate with more honesty, empathy and confidence.
About the Author
Kathryn Mannix spent her medical career working with people living with incurable, advanced illness. Starting in cancer care, she became a pioneer of the new discipline of palliative medicine, working in hospices, hospitals and patients' own homes. In 1993 she established one of the first CBT clinics dedicated to palliative care patients. Her previous book, With the End in Mind, was a Sunday Times bestseller, and she continues to write and speak widely on dying, grief and communication.
Why You'll Love This Book
Warm, wise and deeply human, Listen gives readers the confidence and language to have the conversations that matter most — with honesty, empathy and courage, however hard the subject.
