Overview
This three-book hardback collection by Scottish author Mairi Kidd shines a light on the forgotten, feisty and formidable women of Celtic and Scottish history. From warriors and scientists to those accused of witchcraft, each book rescues real "her-stories" from the margins of the record books. Written with wit, warmth and rigorous research, this set is a brilliant gift for anyone who loves social history, feminist biography, or a fierce dose of inspiration from the past.
About the Books
Feisty and Fiery and Fierce gathers the "her-stories" of Celtic sisters from Scotland, Ireland and Wales — prophets, photographers, artists and activists whose courage and defiance still resonate today. Warriors and Witches and Damn Rebel Bitches turns its attention north of the border, celebrating Scottish women of wit, wisdom and wickedness, from astronomer Williamina Fleming to mathematician Mary Somerville and the formidable Countess Agnes Randolph — women whose ambitions, frustrations and triumphs offer sharp lessons for modern readers. We Are All Witches completes the set with a haunting exploration of the women accused, tried and persecuted as witches in Scotland between 1563 and 1736, giving voice to lives that history too often silenced. Together, the three books trace a rich thread of female resilience through Scottish and Celtic history — from battlefield to courtroom, laboratory to gallows — told in Mairi Kidd's distinctive, accessible and provocative style, weaving English, Scots and Gaelic voices throughout.
About the Author
Mairi Kidd is Head of Literature, Languages and Publishing at Creative Scotland and was formerly Managing Director of Barrington Stoke, an award-winning publisher. A fluent Gaelic speaker, she holds an MA in Celtic Studies from the University of Edinburgh and has worked in books throughout her career. Her novel The Specimens was named Waterstones Scottish Book of the Month, and short stories from her collection We Are All Witches inspired the acclaimed "Heal and Harrow" project. She lives by the sea in Edinburgh with her illustrator husband and their rescue cat.
Why You'll Love This Collection
Sharp, funny and fiercely researched, these three hardbacks bring long-overlooked Celtic and Scottish women roaring back into the spotlight — perfect for history lovers, feminists and anyone who enjoys their inspiration served with attitude.
