Overview
Discover the quietly devastating, beautifully observed novels of Mary Lawson in this four-book paperback collection. Set against the rugged backdrops of rural Northern Ontario, these interlinked tales of family, loss, loyalty and reinvention have captivated readers and critics worldwide. From Crow Lake to the Booker Prize-shortlisted A Town Called Solace, this set brings together some of the finest contemporary Canadian literary fiction in one collectable bundle for devoted readers and newcomers alike.
About the Books
Mary Lawson's novels return again and again to the small, close-knit communities of Northern Ontario, where silence can be as loud as any confession and the past is never far from the surface. Crow Lake follows the Morrison siblings, haunted since childhood by the sudden death of their parents, as old wounds resurface and choices made long ago threaten to unravel a fragile peace. The Other Side of the Bridge traces two brothers, Arthur and Jake, whose rivalry and buried resentments play out across decades of hardship. Road Ends centres on Megan Cartwright, the only daughter in a large, chaotic family, who finally leaves small-town life behind for London in 1966 — only to find the family she left unravelling without her. A Town Called Solace, Lawson's most celebrated novel, weaves together the lives of a missing teenage girl, a grieving elderly neighbour and a mysterious new arrival, in a story about found family and unexpected connection. Together, these four novels showcase Lawson's hallmark style: spare, compassionate prose; richly drawn small-town settings; and an unerring eye for the complexities of family life.
