Overview
Meet Max, an ordinary boy with an extraordinary best friend: Kevin, the only roly-poly flying pony in Bumbleford. This four-book paperback collection follows the pair through storms, biscuit heists, unicorn rivalries and celebrity kidnappings. Written by acclaimed author Philip Reeve and illustrated by Sarah McIntyre, the Max and Kevin series is packed with warmth, silliness and heart, perfect for confident young readers aged 7-9 who love funny, fast-paced adventures with a biscuit-obsessed hero at the centre of the chaos.
About the Books
The collection begins with The Legend of Kevin, when a magical storm sends a roly-poly flying pony crashing into Max's flat, triggering a flood that only the pair can fix, fuelled by biscuits. In Kevin and the Biscuit Bandit, biscuit thefts sweep Bumbleford and all clues point to Kevin, forcing the pair on the run to clear his name. Kevin vs the Unicorns sees the pair entering the Magical Pony Club Steeplechase, where Kevin must race snobby unicorns despite having no interest in racing. Finally, in Kevin's Great Escape, pop star Misty Twiglet takes a shine to Kevin, but when he's captured in her garden, Max and sister Daisy must rescue him. Across all four stories, Philip Reeve's witty, rhythmic prose and Sarah McIntyre's lively illustrations combine to create a hugely appealing series for children moving into longer, illustrated chapter books. Each story is short enough to build reading confidence, yet full of jokes, cliffhangers and larger-than-life characters that keep young readers hooked from cover to cover - a brilliant next step for fans of funny animal stories and quirky, character-driven adventures.
About the Author
Philip Reeve is a British author and illustrator best known for the Mortal Engines series, as well as Railhead and Here Lies Arthur. Before turning to writing, he spent years illustrating and providing cartoons and comic strips for around forty children's books, including the Horrible Histories and Murderous Maths series. He co-created the Max and Kevin books with illustrator Sarah McIntyre, bringing the same wit and warmth to a younger readership that made his earlier novels so acclaimed.
Why You'll Love This Collection
Four complete stories of biscuit-fuelled chaos, unicorn rivalries and heroic rescues make this set packed with laughs, warmth and adventure - ideal for young readers ready to fall in love with Kevin, the world's only roly-poly flying pony.
