Overview
This brand new paperback set brings together two of Max Hastings's most celebrated works of military history: Sword, his vivid account of the D-Day landings, and Operation Biting, the thrilling story of a daring 1942 commando raid. Together they showcase why Hastings is regarded as one of Britain's foremost chroniclers of the Second World War, combining meticulous research with gripping, human-centred storytelling that has made both books Sunday Times bestsellers.
About the Book(s)
In Sword, Max Hastings explores the actions of the Commando brigade and Montgomery's 3rd Infantry and 6th Airborne divisions on and around Sword Beach on 6 June 1944. Rather than offering a broad overview of D-Day, Hastings narrows his focus to this single beach, following individual soldiers, officers and ordinary men through the chaos, fear and bravery of the invasion. The result is an intimate, unflinching portrait of combat that brings the brutal reality of the Normandy landings vividly to life.
Operation Biting tells the story of one of the most audacious British commando raids of the Second World War. In February 1942, RAF intelligence identified a mysterious new German radar system, codenamed Würzburg, on the coast of occupied France. What followed was a high-stakes parachute assault to seize vital components of the technology. Hastings reconstructs the planning, the night jump, and the desperate fight to extract the raiders, delivering a tense, fast-paced narrative grounded in rigorous research.
Both titles exemplify Hastings's trademark blend of narrative drive, archival depth and sharp analysis, making this set an outstanding introduction to his wartime histories or a welcome addition for existing fans.
