Overview
Discover two of Mike Gayle's most beloved, life-affirming novels in one beautifully packaged paperback set. All The Lonely People follows an elderly widower determined to hide his loneliness, while Half a World Away traces two estranged siblings searching for connection across a divided London. Together they showcase Gayle's trademark warmth, humour and emotional honesty, making this collection a heartfelt gift for fans of uplifting, character-driven contemporary fiction.
About the Books
In All The Lonely People, Hubert Bird spins a comforting fiction for his daughter in Australia, describing a retirement full of friends and adventure. In truth, he has withdrawn almost entirely from the world, and when his daughter announces a visit, Hubert scrambles to make his real life match the one he's invented. Along the way he rekindles an old friendship, finds unexpected romance and joins a bold community project — but the secret of his isolation still threatens to surface.
Half a World Away introduces Kerry Hayes, a single mother in south London who cleans homes she could never afford, still haunted by memories of being taken into care as a child. Across the city, successful barrister Noah Martineau enjoys a comfortable life with his family, having been adopted young and never looked back. When Kerry reaches out to the brother she lost the day they were separated, she sets off a chain of events that will reshape both of their lives. Together, these novels explore family, memory and the quiet resilience of ordinary people, told with Gayle's signature blend of humour and heart.
