Overview
Step into the wild, unforgiving beauty of the Lake District with this gripping five-book collection following Detective Sergeant Washington Poe and the brilliantly eccentric analyst Tilly Bradshaw. Written by former probation officer M W Craven, this multi-award-winning crime series has become one of British fiction's most talked-about detective partnerships. From burning stone circles to buried body parts, each book delivers a twisty, atmospheric mystery. Perfect for fans of dark, character-driven crime thrillers, this brand-new paperback set is an unmissable addition to any crime reader's shelf.
About the Books
This collection brings together five instalments in M W Craven's celebrated Washington Poe series, all set against the brooding backdrop of Cumbria's fells and valleys. The Puppet Show opens the series as a serial killer burns victims alive within ancient stone circles, dragging disgraced detective Poe back from suspension when his own name is carved into a body. Black Summer turns the case personal when a man convicted of murdering his daughter on Poe's testimony walks free after she reappears very much alive. The Curator sees a killer leave grotesque, cryptic messages beside dismembered body parts scattered across a Cumbrian Christmas. Dead Ground pulls Poe from a courtroom battle over his beloved croft straight into a brutal, seemingly straightforward murder that proves anything but simple. Finally, The Botanist finds Poe relying on his small circle of trusted allies, including Tilly Bradshaw, boss Stephanie Flynn, and neighbour Victoria, to untangle another fiendishly plotted case. Together, these five novels showcase Craven's trademark blend of forensic detail, dry humour, and razor-sharp plotting, cementing Washington Poe as one of modern crime fiction's most compelling protagonists.
About the Author
M W Craven was born in Carlisle and grew up in Newcastle, joining the British Army at sixteen. After ten years as an armourer travelling the world, he left to study social work, specialising in criminology and substance misuse. He then spent sixteen years with the Cumbria Probation Service, rising to assistant chief executive, before taking redundancy to write full time. His firsthand knowledge of criminal justice and the Cumbrian landscape brings unmatched authenticity to the Washington Poe novels, which have won major crime writing awards and topped bestseller charts.
Why You'll Love This Series
Sharp, dark and unexpectedly funny, the Washington Poe novels combine gripping mysteries with genuinely lovable characters. Craven's insider knowledge of policing and the stunning Cumbrian setting make this an essential collection for crime fiction fans wanting their next addictive series.
