Overview
Outlawed is Anna North's genre-bending feminist Western, a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick and instant New York Times bestseller. Set in an alternate 1894 where a devastating flu has left the population depleted, the novel follows Ada, a young midwife's apprentice whose failure to conceive marks her as suspect in a world that hangs "barren" women as witches. Forced to flee her home, Ada falls in with the notorious Hole in the Wall Gang and must decide how far she will go to survive and reshape her own fate.

About the Book
Anna North reimagines the American frontier as a place shaped not just by outlaws and lawmen, but by the desperate pressure placed on women to bear children in a society ravaged by disease. When Ada's marriage produces no pregnancy after a year, whispers of witchcraft begin, and she realises that staying means almost certain death. She escapes into the wilderness and finds refuge with the Hole in the Wall Gang, a band of women and outcasts living outside the rules of ordinary society, each with her own reasons for running. As Ada learns the gang's methods and history, she is drawn into a bold, dangerous plan that could change the future for women like her.

Blending the Western with speculative, dystopian storytelling, Outlawed has been praised for its inventive premise and its exploration of gender, autonomy, and community under pressure. It became an instant sensation on publication, selected for Reese Witherspoon's Book Club and named to numerous "best of the year" lists, and continues to resonate with readers drawn to stories of resilience, sisterhood, and reinvention on the margins of history.
