Overview
This brand-new paperback set brings together the first two instalments in John Banville's acclaimed Strafford and Quirke Mystery series: Snow and April in Spain. Written by the Booker Prize-winning author, these atmospheric, character-driven crime novels pair Detective Inspector St John Strafford with Dublin pathologist Quirke in taut, beautifully written mysteries. Perfect for fans of literary crime fiction, this collection offers immersive Irish settings, intricate plotting and Banville's celebrated prose in one satisfying paperback bundle.
About the Books
Snow opens in 1957, when Detective Inspector St John Strafford is summoned from Dublin to investigate the murder of a parish priest at Ballyglass House, the remote Co. Wexford seat of the secretive Osborne family. Facing obstruction from every direction, Strafford pursues the truth with quiet determination as snow piles up around the isolated estate, and the family's hidden secrets slowly surface. A classic country-house mystery with a distinctly Irish, mid-century unease, Snow was shortlisted for the CWA Historical Dagger and became a Sunday Times bestseller.
April in Spain follows directly on, reuniting readers with pathologist Quirke and Detective Strafford. While holidaying with his wife in Spain, Quirke glimpses a face he is certain he recognises — a woman connected to a scandal that once threatened an Irish political dynasty. Unable to let the matter rest, Quirke calls Dublin, and Strafford is dispatched to Spain, only to find a hitman is already closing in. Sun-drenched yet tense, this sequel blends psychological insight with a gripping pursuit, confirming why Banville's Strafford and Quirke novels are so widely admired.
