Overview
Continue the voyage with the second half of Arthur Ransome's beloved twelve-book saga in this brand new six-title paperback set. This collection carries the Swallows, Amazons, and friends further afield — to the Norfolk Broads, the high seas, and the South China Sea. Packed with sailing, mystery, and mischief, it's the perfect way for young readers to complete their journey through a cherished children's classic.
About the Book(s)
This set opens with We Didn't Mean to Go to Sea, in which John, Susan, Titty and Roger disobey a promise and battle a night gale in the treacherous North Sea. In Secret Water, the crew maps a maze of small islands near Pin Mill, uncovering mysterious "savages" and a tribal totem. The Big Six turns detective, as Bill, Peter and Joe are falsely accused of setting boats adrift and must clear their names.
Missee Lee whisks Nancy Blackett and the crew across the world, rescued after a shipwreck by a tiny, formidable pirate captain with other plans for her guests. The Picts and the Martyrs brings the action back to the lake, as Nancy and Peggy play "Martyrs" under a fearsome Great Aunt's eye, while Dick and Dorothea go undercover as "Picts". The set closes with Great Northern?, where Dick's birdwatching triggers a tense chase, as the crew races to protect rare birds from a ruthless egg-collector. Together, these six novels round off the series with humour, ingenuity, and nautical daring.
About the Author
Arthur Ransome was born in Leeds in 1884. After a career in journalism that took him to Russia, where he reported on the 1917 Revolution for the Manchester Guardian, he settled in England's Lake District with his Russian wife. There, in 1929, he wrote Swallows and Amazons, launching a series now treasured in British children's literature. He won the inaugural Carnegie Medal in 1936 for Pigeon Post, and his stories continue to inspire young sailors and adventurers today.
