Overview
Step into Victorian west Wales with this atmospheric three-book set from Alis Hawkins' acclaimed Teifi Valley Coroner series. Following blind barrister-turned-coroner Harry Probert-Lloyd and his sharp assistant John Davies, these character-driven mysteries blend genuine historical detail with page-turning suspense. Ideal for readers who love slow-burn, literary crime fiction set outside London, this collection brings together three pivotal instalments in Harry and John's ongoing investigations across the close-knit communities of the Teifi Valley.
About the Books
In Those Who Know, Harry has inherited the Glanteifi estate and must campaign to be voted coroner permanently, a task ill-suited to his temperament. When radical schoolteacher Nicholas Rowland is found dead during the hustings, Harry and John suspect his death was no accident. In In Two Minds, Harry begins work as acting coroner when a faceless body is discovered on an isolated beach. His pursuit of the truth leads him to collaborate with a doctor whose experimental theories are considered dangerously radical, ruffling feathers among the local establishment. In Not One Of Us, Harry is stretched thin by his encroaching blindness, friction with the county magistrates, and an estate on the brink of bankruptcy. Seeking escape, he joins Dr Benton Reckitt to review the apparently natural death of young Lizzie Rees, only to find mistakes were made that demand further scrutiny. Together, these three novels showcase Hawkins' meticulous research and gift for character, immersing readers in a richly realised 1850s Wales where class, politics and justice constantly collide.
About the Author
Alis Hawkins grew up on a dairy farm in Cardiganshire before reading English at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, and training as a Speech and Language Therapist. She has spent decades raising two sons, working with children on the autism spectrum, and writing fiction, non-fiction and plays. She writes character-driven historical crime with literary production values, drawing on rigorous research, including hands-on experience with traditional Welsh charcoal burning in the Forest of Dean, to bring authentic texture to her Teifi Valley novels.
Why You'll Love This Set
Immersive, intelligent and beautifully written, this collection offers hours of gripping Victorian crime fiction. Ideal for readers seeking mysteries with depth, historical authenticity and a strong sense of place beyond the usual London setting.
