Overview
The Angels of Lovely Lane is the first novel in Nadine Dorries's much-loved Lovely Lane series, transporting readers to 1953 Liverpool, where five young women arrive at a nurses' home to begin training at St Angelus Hospital. Blending warmth, humour and heartbreak, this saga of friendship and resilience captures the strict hierarchies of postwar hospital life and the bonds that form when very different backgrounds collide under one roof.

About the Book
It is 1953, and Lovely Lane in Liverpool becomes home to five very different young trainee nurses starting their careers at St Angelus Hospital. Dana has fled her family farm on Ireland's west coast, Victoria is escaping a debt-ridden aristocratic upbringing, Beth is an army brat who falls in with the sharp-tongued Celia Forsyth, and Pammy hails from the rougher side of Liverpool. Thrown together in the nurses' home, the girls must learn to navigate a rigidly hierarchical hospital world where rules are strictly enforced and stepping out of line has consequences. Friendships form, rivalries simmer, and romance stirs against the backdrop of ward duties and matron's watchful eye. But the fragile order of St Angelus is shattered when an unknown young woman is admitted following a botched, illegal abortion carried out in a backstreet kitchen. As the truth behind the tragedy slowly unravels, it threatens to expose secrets that could rock the hospital, and the lives of the five young nurses, to their very foundations. Rich in period detail and told with Dorries's trademark warmth, the novel is both a coming-of-age story and a vivid portrait of nursing life in 1950s Britain, exploring class, sisterhood, ambition and the price of doing the right thing when the world tells you to look away.
