Overview
The Art of Happiness: A Handbook for Living pairs the spiritual insight of His Holiness the Dalai Lama with the clinical expertise of American psychiatrist Dr Howard C. Cutler to explore how lasting contentment can be cultivated in everyday life. Blending Tibetan Buddhist philosophy with Western psychology, the book distils years of conversation between the two men into a practical, accessible guide. It remains one of the most influential works in modern self-help and continues to resonate with readers seeking calm and inner peace.
About the Book
Structured around conversations recorded over several years, The Art of Happiness sees Dr Cutler put probing, often personal questions to the Dalai Lama about anxiety, loneliness, anger, loss and the pursuit of wealth. Rather than offering abstract theology, the Dalai Lama responds with warmth, humour and grounded practicality, drawing on more than two thousand five hundred years of Buddhist thought while remaining firmly relevant to modern Western life. Cutler frames each exchange with clinical commentary, translating ancient wisdom into psychological insight a contemporary reader can immediately apply. Together they examine how our own minds, rather than external circumstances, are the true source of happiness, and how training the mind through compassion, patience and perspective can transform how we experience daily struggles. The book covers relationships, suffering, change and self-worth, always returning to the premise that happiness is a skill developed through consistent inner work rather than something dependent on luck or possessions. First published in 1998, it spent nearly two years on the New York Times bestseller list and helped launch an entire genre of mindfulness-led self-help literature. This edition presents the complete original handbook in a compact paperback, ideal for readers encountering the Dalai Lama's teaching for the first time or returning to a classic of the genre.
