Overview:
The Big Bang! is a tender, funny picture book from Strictly Come Dancing champion Rose Ayling-Ellis, chosen as an official World Book Day 2026 title. Perfect for children aged 3-5, it follows kitten friends Halo, Rocky and Casper through a stormy night that changes how they see one another. When lightning sends Casper dashing off, his friends discover he is deaf and must find a new way to reach him. Warm and beautifully illustrated, it gently introduces deafness, empathy and friendship to young readers.
About the Book:
When a noisy storm rumbles overhead, Halo and Rocky are frightened by thunder and lightning, but their friend Casper seems strangely unbothered. It is only when a sudden burst of light sends Casper racing off that the kittens realise something is wrong, and their search leads to an important discovery: Casper is deaf. Determined to find him, Halo and Rocky must learn to be brave, work together and communicate in a whole new way that does not rely on sound. Along the way, the story gently shows understanding and kindness matter as much as courage. Illustrated with warmth by Paddy Donnelly, the book brings a rain-lit night, a cosy home and a joyful reunion to life. Rose Ayling-Ellis has said Casper was inspired by cats from her own childhood, giving the story real, personal heart. Short, rhythmic sentences and expressive pictures make The Big Bang! ideal for bedtime reading, classroom story time, or World Book Day celebrations, sparking gentle conversations about hearing loss and communication.
