Overview
Thinking, Fast and Slow is Daniel Kahneman's landmark exploration of the two systems that drive human thought: the fast, intuitive, emotional System 1, and the slower, more deliberate, logical System 2. Drawing on decades of pioneering research in psychology and behavioural economics, Kahneman reveals how these two systems shape our judgments, decisions, and behaviours, often leading us astray through predictable biases. This bestselling paperback is essential reading for anyone curious about how the mind really works.
About the Book
In this global bestseller, Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman distils a lifetime of research into an accessible account of the mind. He explains why we trust bold-typed information more, why judges are harsher before lunch, and why we assume attractive people are more competent. Behind each puzzle lies the interplay between fast, instinctive thinking and slow, effortful reasoning. Kahneman shows how intuitive System 1 is efficient yet prone to systematic errors, while the more careful System 2 can override mistakes but is often too lazy to engage. Along the way, he introduces concepts that reshaped modern economics and psychology, including loss aversion, anchoring, the availability heuristic, and prospect theory — the theory that won him his Nobel Prize. Rather than simply cataloguing cognitive flaws, Kahneman offers practical strategies for recognising compromised judgment and building in safeguards, personally and organisationally. Whether making decisions at work, evaluating risk, or understanding your own mind, this book provides the vocabulary and insight to think more clearly. It is a rare work that is both scientifically rigorous and genuinely entertaining, filled with memorable examples that will change how you see your own thinking.
About the Author
Daniel Kahneman (1934–2024) was an Israeli-American psychologist renowned for his work on the psychology of judgment and decision-making, as well as behavioural economics. In 2002 he was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his research, conducted with long-time collaborator Amos Tversky, into how heuristics and biases shape human decision-making. Kahneman was Professor Emeritus of Psychology and Public Affairs at Princeton University's Woodrow Wilson School. Thinking, Fast and Slow, published in 2011, summarised much of his life's research and became an instant international bestseller.
