Jerome K. Jerome (1859–1927) was an English writer and humorist born in Walsall, who endured a difficult and impoverished early life before finding success as a writer in his twenties. His 1889 honeymoon on the River Thames directly inspired Three Men in a Boat, the comic travelogue that became an immediate bestseller and remains his most celebrated work.
