Overview
Escape to the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Dales with Gervase Phinn's much-loved Top of the Dale series, collected here as a brand new 3-book paperback set. Following newly qualified teacher Tom Dwyer as he settles into the tiny village of Risingdale, these three warm, funny novels blend gentle comedy, community spirit and genuine heart. A perfect gift for readers who love cosy, character-driven British fiction in the tradition of James Herriot.
About the Books
This set brings together all three novels in Gervase Phinn's Top of the Dale series. In The School at the Top of the Dale, newly qualified teacher Tom Dwyer arrives in Risingdale, a sleepy village at the very top of the Yorkshire Dales, where pupils know more about sheep than arithmetic and a sparky rivalry with the stand-offish Miss Janette Fairborn soon develops. In Tales Out of School, Tom hopes for a quieter second term, but village life has other plans: nursing a broken heart, he finds himself distracted by a striking London artist newly arrived in Risingdale, and by her precocious, frail son who joins his class. In A Class Act, headmaster Gerald Gaunt retires after decades of service, and Mr Smart steps in with different ideas, testing friendships and stirring gentle drama. Together, the three novels form a warm portrait of school life and community in a small Yorkshire village. Written with the authenticity of a lifelong educator, these are firm favourites for readers who enjoy nostalgic, feel-good fiction.
