Overview
Step into the fog-wreathed courtyards of London's Inner Temple with this two-book paperback collection starring reluctant amateur sleuth Sir Gabriel Ward KC. Set in 1901, these witty, atmospheric mysteries blend Edwardian legal drama with classic whodunit charm. Ideal for fans of cosy crime and courtroom intrigue, this set brings together the first two instalments of Sally Smith's acclaimed series in one gift-ready package for UK readers.
About the Books
In A Case of Mice and Murder, barrister Gabriel Ward steps out on a sunny May morning in 1901 with his mind full of a dispute over the authorship of a bestselling children's book, only to stumble upon the body of the Lord Chief Justice of England on his doorstep, complete with a silver carving knife and oddly bare feet. In the Inner Temple, murder has stayed confined to the casebooks for centuries. Until now.
The mystery continues in A Case of Life and Limb, where the Temple's calm is shattered by a series of unsettling parcels sent to Temple Treasurer Sir William Waring. As more packages arrive, each stranger than the last, and one proves fatal, Gabriel realises someone bears a grudge against the Temple itself. Working with Constable Wright of the City of London Police, Gabriel must identify the culprit before the body count rises, all while juggling a libel case for a rising theatrical star. Both novels are richly steeped in the history and eccentric charm of the Inner Temple, offering warmth, wit and genuine mystery in equal measure.
About the Author
Sally Smith is a barrister and King's Counsel who spent her entire working life in the Inner Temple. After writing a biography of the renowned Edwardian barrister Sir Edward Marshall Hall KC, she retired from the bar to write full time. Her debut novel was inspired by the historic surroundings in which she lived and worked, and by the rich archives of the Inner Temple. Smith brings genuine legal expertise and deep affection for this hidden corner of London to every page of the Gabriel Ward series.
Why You'll Love This Collection
Clever plotting, gentle humour and a genuinely lovable lead character make this set a treat for cosy crime fans. Two atmospheric mysteries, one wonderful world to escape into, and a series you'll want to see through to the end.
