Overview
War Doctor: Surgery on the Front Line is the searing true memoir of David Nott, the surgeon who has spent over twenty-five years volunteering in the world's most dangerous war zones. Blending raw medical detail with profound humanity, this paperback account follows Nott from besieged Sarajevo to underground hospitals in Aleppo, revealing the extraordinary skill, courage, and moral weight of operating where help is scarce and danger constant. It is essential reading for anyone drawn to real-life stories of resilience, medicine, and conflict.
About the Book
For more than two and a half decades, David Nott has taken unpaid leave from his NHS post as a general and vascular surgeon to work in some of the planet's most hostile environments. War Doctor traces his journeys through Sarajevo under siege in 1993, rebel-held eastern Aleppo, and a string of conflicts that map the shape of modern warfare, including Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Darfur, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Gaza, and Syria. Beyond war, he has also responded to catastrophic natural disasters, including the earthquakes in Haiti and Nepal. Widely regarded as one of the most experienced trauma surgeons in the world, Nott recounts split-second decisions made with minimal equipment, the ethical dilemmas of triage under fire, and the psychological toll of moving between the calm of a London operating theatre and the chaos of a field hospital. The result is a memoir that is as much about the resilience of ordinary people caught in extraordinary violence as it is about the surgeon who tries to save them. Unflinching, humane, and often deeply moving, it is a rare first-hand account from someone who has chosen, again and again, to go where the need is greatest.
About the Author

Since the early 1990s he has repeatedly taken unpaid leave from his NHS duties to volunteer with organisations such as Médecins Sans Frontières and the International Committee of the Red Cross, operating in war-torn and disaster-struck regions across the globe. He also founded the David Nott Foundation, which trains surgeons for humanitarian work in conflict zones.
