Overview
Where the Crawdads Sing is Delia Owens' phenomenal, bestselling debut, blending murder mystery, courtroom drama and coming-of-age story in the marshes of North Carolina. Told with vivid sensory detail, it follows Kya Clark, the reclusive "Marsh Girl," surviving alone after being abandoned by her family. When a local man is found dead, suspicion falls on Kya, drawing readers into a beautifully written tale of isolation, resilience, love and nature's quiet secrets.

About the Book
For years, rumours of the 'Marsh Girl' have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet fishing town on the North Carolina coast. Abandoned by her family as a child, Kya Clark raises herself amid the marshland's herons, gulls and tides, becoming an expert in the natural world around her shack. Locals dismiss her as wild and uneducated, yet she is sensitive and quietly brilliant, teaching herself to read and observe the ecosystem she calls home. When handsome Chase Andrews is found dead in late 1969, suspicion falls on Kya, and she becomes the prime suspect in a case that will determine the rest of her life. Interwoven with her present-day trial is the story of her past: the two young men who drew her out of her solitude, and the fierce independence she forges after a lonely childhood. Owens, a trained zoologist, brings the marsh vividly to life, rooting the narrative in authentic natural detail. The result works as a page-turning mystery, a tender coming-of-age story and a lyrical meditation on nature and belonging, championed by Reese Witherspoon's Book Club and later adapted into a major 2022 film.

  • A #1 international bestseller with millions of copies sold worldwide
  • Combines murder mystery, courtroom drama and coming-of-age fiction in one story

  • A Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick, now also a major motion picture
  • Perfect for fans of Barbara Kingsolver and Celeste Ng
  • Brand new UK paperback edition, ideal for gifting or your own reading pile

About the Author
Delia Owens is an American author, zoologist and conservationist who spent decades studying wildlife in remote Africa. Before turning to fiction, she co-authored three internationally bestselling nonfiction books about her life as a field scientist, including Cry of the Kalahari. Where the Crawdads Sing, published in 2018, was her literary fiction debut and became one of the bestselling novels of the decade. Owens grew up in southern Georgia, spending much of her life in or near true wilderness, an experience that informs the natural world she captures on the page.
