Overview
The Wood Fire Handbook by Vincent Thurkettle is the definitive guide to building, tending, and enjoying the perfect wood fire, whether indoors on a hearth or outdoors around a campfire. Written by a lifelong woodsman and Chartered Forester, this handbook blends practical know-how with genuine woodland craft. From choosing the right timber to laying the perfect flame, it turns a simple pleasure into a rewarding, well-understood skill for every fire lover.
About the Book
There is something universally soothing about the crackle of a wood fire and the glow of embers, and Vincent Thurkettle's handbook exists to help readers get the very best from that experience. Drawing on decades of hands-on forestry work, Thurkettle explains which trees produce the finest firewood, how to split, season and store logs correctly, and the techniques behind laying a fire that catches quickly and burns cleanly. The book covers the science of moisture content and combustion in accessible, everyday language, so readers understand exactly why some methods work and others don't. It also explores the more atmospheric side of wood burning, including how to choose wood for its distinctive scent and how to build the perfect campfire for gatherings outdoors. Richly illustrated and clearly structured, this second edition hardback is designed to be both a practical manual and an attractive addition to any bookshelf. Whether the reader has an open hearth, a wood-burning stove, or simply loves an outdoor fire pit, this book rediscovers traditional skills passed down through generations of countryside dwellers. It's an ideal read for anyone wanting more warmth, enjoyment and confidence from their fires, and makes a thoughtful gift for outdoor enthusiasts, homeowners with a stove, or keen campers alike.
