Overview
The Wyndham and Banerjee Series 5 Books Collection Set gathers all five instalments of Abir Mukherjee's award-winning historical crime series in one brand-new paperback bundle. Set against the fading grandeur and simmering unrest of colonial India, the novels follow Captain Sam Wyndham and Sergeant Surendranath "Surrender-not" Banerjee as they investigate murders that expose the fractures of empire. Richly atmospheric, meticulously researched, and shortlisted for major crime writing awards, this is an ideal starter set for readers new to the series or a complete refresh for long-time fans wanting every title together.
About the Books
A Rising Man opens in 1919 Calcutta, where Wyndham, seeking a fresh start after the First World War, investigates the murder of a senior British official amid rising political unrest. A Necessary Evil moves to the kingdom of Sambalpore in 1920, where the assassination of a Maharaja's son threatens to unravel royal politics and buried secrets. In Smoke and Ashes (1921), Wyndham battles a private opium addiction while a string of murders leads him into Calcutta's underworld of drug dens and vice. Death in the East forces Wyndham to confront his own past when an old flame is attacked and later found dead. The final book, The Shadows of Men, unfolds in 1923 as the murder of a Hindu theologian threatens communal violence across the city, testing the partnership between Wyndham and Banerjee like never before.
About the Author
Abir Mukherjee is a Scottish crime writer of Indian heritage whose Wyndham and Banerjee novels have won and been shortlisted for numerous prizes, including the CWA Historical Dagger and the CWA Gold Dagger. Drawing on his family history and a deep interest in the final years of the British Raj, Mukherjee brings a distinctive authenticity and moral complexity to his depictions of colonial India. Before becoming a full-time novelist, he worked as an accountant, and he now writes full time, continuing to expand the acclaimed series that began with A Rising Man in 2017.
